Let’s Get Some Clarity - My Story

In the early 90's I had been working with some friends on developing training programs designed to teach people how to develop and implement overseas projects. That’s when I started thinking about working overseas myself.

During this time I came across Barbara Sher’s book "Wishcraft". It’s a great resource for helping people define, and find or create meaningful work and life experiences. You’ll notice a link to the online version in the Mighty Links section on the sidebar of this blog.

At first I focused on the exercises in the book that help you define your core desires, or as Barbara calls them, your Touchstones. I narrowed my desires down to working in South Korea, Thailand, and on the Interent.

So I had my direction, but no specific ideas on where to apply or what to create. Within a short time I heard about a friend teaching in a language school (hogwon) in South Korea and I decided this would be my goal.

I used the project planning guides in Wishcraft to help me organize my job search. As it turned out, I gave my friend some resumes and I landed a job through her. I then used the planning guides to help me organize all the things I needed to get done to prepare for travel and life overseas.

From this example I want to point out that getting clear on what you want to do can often be a gradual process and it’s important to stay positive and focused. Barbara encourages people to develop a support team or buddy system to help you through this process.

Summary on Gaining Clarity

1. Get clear on your direction using the exercises in Wishcraft or the one I outlined in my first post to this blog.

2. Develop your direction into a specific goal. There’s lots of ideas on how to do this in Barbara Sher’s book.

3. Get organized to achieve your goal - again lots of good guidance in "Wishcraft".

4. Perhaps the first thing you should do is find people to help you stay focused while you’re going through this process.

Next Week:

So now you know your direction and have a goal but something keeps holding you back. You’re being attacked by the "Yes, But’s". How do you handle those nagging feelings, or deep down fear, of making such a big change in your life?

There’s been a lot of progress made in understanding the mind/body energy system and how to clear one’s energy system of negative emotions. In my next post I’ll discuss how to use energy clearing techniques so you can move forward to your goal unencumbered by limiting beliefs and feelings.
